Why do 'Urdu knowing' individuals, who are not much competent in English, prefer Roman script over Urdu script to 'chat' or 'correspond' on the Internet?
The question should have been asked to them.
Nevertheless, three reasons, as under, are submitted herewith:
Urdu Nastaleeq is not yet a modern IT script, handy on the Internet.
Although the users may not be competent in English language, yet they at least know English alphabet and their basic sounds. So, they use English phonetics to pronounce or transliterate Urdu. This use of script is called 'Roman Urdu' or 'Urdu in Roman'.
In Urdu script each letter is represented by about four different forms, depending upon their locations with in a word. In Roman script each Urdu letter can be represented by only one symbol or so. This is a great advantage of Roman over Urdu Nastaleeq, but not against Single Case Urdu Font.
Single Case Urdu Font equals Roman script, as it also functions with only one symbol or so for each Urdu letter.
Additionally, its symbols or shapes are 'Nastaleeq' in appearance, and not alien like Roman or Devnagri.
Furthermore, Single Case Urdu Font writes from the traditional right hand side, unlike Roman which writes from the left hand side.
What is a single common advantage between Urdu written in Roman and Urdu written in Single Case Urdu Font?
Both type faces or fonts use only one specific symbol for each and every Urdu letter. Traditional Nastaleeq required up to four different shapes or styles for each Urdu letter.
Is there any advantage using Single Case Urdu Font vis-à-vis typing Urdu in Roman script?
Yes, there are two extra advantages using Single Case Urdu Font vis-à-vis typing Urdu in Roman script.
The symbols and shapes of Single Case Urdu Font belong to Urdu hierarchy and not alien to Urdu culture.
Direction of reading a text typed in Single Case Urdu Font is from Right to Left.
Can a person like me, illiterate in Urdu, learn to read Urdu on Single Case Urdu script?
Sure, you can. It shall be more convenient and easy to learn to read Urdu on Single Case Urdu script than on the traditional Nastaleeq.
Let learning 'Urdu Nastaleeq' be equated to learning and riding a bicycle by a child. Then learning and reading Urdu on the Single Case Urdu script is more equal to learning, riding and enjoying a tricycle by the same child. For all purposes he is a 'cycle rider.'
The child, when he grows up, may get on to the bicycle and perform same duties again.
What is meant by the 'Heirs of Urdu?'
'Heirs of Urdu' are the children and grand children of Urdu speaking
parents. They are great if they speak and understand Urdu and greater
if they read Urdu Nastaleeq. Many of them are real good. But some
of them do not or can not read Urdu Nastaleeq.
However, they love to read an alien (non Urdu) script, on which they can 'listen and feel' the utterances of their Urdu language, specially when they have to correspond and chat on the Internet.
Currently, they are obliged to transliterate Urdu in English alphabet
for their typing and reading purposes, on Internet. It is because
Urdu in Nastaleeq script has fewer capability than the Urdu being
typed, from Left to Right, in English or Roman script.
Once they learn that, 'Easy Read Urdu,' is about to have similar
and equal facilities like Roman, they shall do typing and reading
from Right to Left, on a non alien script, viz. 'Easy Read Urdu.'
Instead of 'Urdu via Roman,' their road will be 'Urdu via ERU.'
This is not true that, the 'Heirs of Urdu' resort to Roman Urdu, only because they can't read Urdu. Many of us can read Urdu Nastaleeq, but we are not able to type Urdu online or offline. We Romanize, because Urdu in its traditional form, does not offer us, what Roman alphabet and their usefulness on Internet and in Information Technology, offer to its users. What are you trying to achieve through ERU, (Easy Read Urdu) ?
Thank you very much for your fine question and its fair background.
Once Easy Read Urdu is further developed by programmers and IT specialists and made equally useful as the Roman, the 'Heirs of Urdu' will be more thrilled, pleased and proud to use ERU.
ERU is easy because it works with just one symbol per letter. Its 'Single Case Urdu Font' is a true type font and in due course, can easily attain all essential capabilities, required of a modern IT language.
Support ERU and watch ERU transform Urdu into a modern IT language.
This is what we are trying to achieve through ERU. Support Urdu
and join hands to glorify Urdu, the world over. Thank you.
