Students of English Language learn 26 alphabet. Each alphabet has
2 forms or types of symbols, the Upper case and the Lower case. So,
English is printed using a maximum of 52 symbols only.
SOME TIMES, ENGLISH IS PRINTED USING 26 'UPPER CASE SYMBOLS' ONLY, AND IS READ
AS SUCH.
First hurdle: Compared with English, Urdu has more alphabet
and more symbols per alphabet. In a traditional 'Nastaleeq,' font,
each Urdu alphabet has up to four forms or symbols. These symbols
or forms are specific in their use. First form or symbol is used as
an 'isolated letter.' This form can be termed as the 'Capital' or
an 'Upper Case' letter. Second form or symbol is used as the 'initial
or starting' letter in a word. Third form or symbol is used at all
'inner' locations with in a word. Fourth form or symbol is used as
the 'last or final letter' located in a word.
Thus, Urdu letters are represented by over 120 forms or symbols.
In contrast English, when symbolized in 'upper case,' is printed with
26 symbols, only. The convenience of having a smaller number of alphabetic
symbols cannot be over emphasised.
To acquire the capability of printing Urdu text with a single symbol
per letter capability, has been an inclination, a requirement, the
research and development for a long time.
Second hurdle: In traditional Urdu prints, there are far more
'resembling' symbols than the 'non-resembling' ones. And, the resemblance
or likeness between the symbols is too deep to be easily found. The
confusion being caused by too much similarity, deserves to be eliminated,
as well.
The Single Case Urdu Font successfully produces Urdu prints,
using only one symbol per letter or per character. Each symbol is
custom designed, perfected and suitable for a particular letter.
Each single symbol has been developed and tested as a distinct, non-similar to other symbols, ornamental and calligraphic in appearance, and more convenient and functional in utility. It is suitable in all four situations: the first, in-between or the last letter in a word or just by it self.
The Single Case Urdu Font does not require its readers to learn,
memorize and pick a letter, from a pool of over 120 mutually confusing
alphabetic symbols, used in contemporary type faces.
The Font eliminates the existing confusion of readers, to pick up a right letter from a pool of too many mutually resembling symbols. It reduces the conventional similarities between currently similar Urdu symbols.
It also eliminates an existing bafflement of the students. That is to consider:
- The absence of or the presence of the 'dots' or 'nuktay' associated
with each symbol.
- Followed by the counting of the 'dots' associated with that symbol.
- Further followed by the determination of location of 'dots,' (either above, below or inside the symbol) to arrive at the right choice about the basic sound of the symbol.
All symbols have been picked up and derived from the grand works
of old masters. All designs and shapes of 'dots' have also been selected
from old grand works. Beside, the 'dots' associated with each symbol
display the same geometry, graphics and trends as that of its alphabetic
symbol.
The Single Case Font links the letters in each word, creating the consistent effect of traditional flow. It produces an impressive, ornamental, calligraphic and more comfortable text and prints.
If desired, the letters can have gaps between them, like the gaps in English upper case letters.
Readers, proficient on the traditional fonts, can easily master the symbols in Single Case Urdu Font and read the text very easily. On the other hand, the readers of the Single Case Urdu Font, as and when they like and try, can pick up reading the traditional scripts. Till then, they have relief, comfort, and luxury of working with one symbol, instead of 2, 3, 4 or even 5 symbols for a letter.
The Single Case Urdu Font, working with 40 alphabetic symbols, is
real comfortable to the beginners, seniors, adults and children. They
can quickly learn Easy Read Urdu on a simplified 'Nastaleeq,' instead
of quarrying their Urdu from the mine of Roman Script. All of them
deserve an easygoing beginning to read and relish Urdu prose, poetry,
drama, news, etc. and the 'chat' on the Internet.
All these aims or essentials have been the causes, to produce Single Case Urdu Font.
