Characteristics of Urdu Text and a few Tips:

• Like English, Urdu text consists of words.
• Urdu words contain letters and diacritics, which are also known as 'Irab.'
• English has no diacritics. Urdu diacritics are the added vowels, for vowel effects.

• Some Urdu letters are pure consonants, while three letters are vowels as well.
• Like English vowels, three Urdu vowels also act as consonants.

• Unlike English, Urdu text contains very few non spoken letters.

• Like English letters, all Urdu letters have a 'Basic Sound' or a 'Phonetic.'
• Without a vowel and / or diacritic, a letter produces its Basic Sound only.

• The diacritics affect 'Basic Sound' of letters to create its 'Affected Sound.'
• With a diacritic, a letter produces a specific Affected Sound.
• With a diacritic, followed by a vowel, a letter produces another specific Affected Sound.

• Urdu letters are either spoken individually or in pairs.
• One had to be thrifty to judge between individual letters and twosome letters.
• Let the combined sound of a pair be called, 'Blended Sound' of the pair.

• Rendering of Basic Sounds, Affected Sounds and Blended Sounds in the required sequence, results into the recitation or reading of Urdu text.
